  • Metaphor
  • "Why waste your time with gophers?" "Their tongues are tied, but completely." -Plath (7)
  • The simile is saying that the basement is dark and warm. The simile is telling us that the basement is isolated and trapped. The author does this to make the situation clearer.
  • Imagery
  • The bus really characterizes Bev as a mean person because she makes Millicent do things. She makes Millicent do things that she doesn't want to do. The author puts this in the story to show that Bev is a flat character and is a very mean person.

  • The imagery is the blue light and the cobwebs. The imagery is explaining to us that there were soft cobwebs and blue light coming in from the full October moon. The author puts this in the story to make us visualize the situation.
  • "The silence was soft with cobwebs, and from the small rectangular windows set high in the stone wall there sifted a faint bluish light that must be coming from the full October moon." -Plath (1)
  • The theme in the story is that it is okay to be different. The heather birds symbolize that Millicent is different but that it is okay to be different. The author puts the heater birds in the story because they create the theme of the story and they represent Millicent.
  • "Within Millicent another melody soared, strong and exuberant, a triumphant answer to the music of the darting heather birds that sang so clear and lilting over the far lands." -Plath (9)
