  • In the opening scene of the play, watchmen spot the ghost of King Hamlet, who reveals that he was poisoned by Claudius and warns the men of the impending danger.
  • Climax
  • Hamlet can't help but contemplate whether or not he should trust the ghost, and what action he should take.
  • Falling Action
  • The King plans to send Hamlet to England after he catches word of Hamlet's "insanity."
  • Denoument
  • Hamlet walks in on Claudius praying. He considers killing him, but worries that if he kills Claudius in a place of God while he is praying, Hamlet would end up in hell.
  • Hamlet is speaking with his mother and thinks they are alone, but mistakenly kills Polonius when he hears him from behind the curtain.
  • Gertrude drinks poison intended for Hamlet. Laertes poisons his sword, but the swords are switched in the heat of the fight, and both Hamlet and Laertes die. Horatio is the last man standing.
