Storyboard Text

  • Hello, we are the Smith Family. We live in a small black town here in South Africa, and this is our challenging journey of everyday life.
  • Whenever we ride the bus on our way to school / work, we always have to sit in the back of the bus
  • We do not  want blacks to sit by us on the bus
  • Transportation in South Africa WHITES IN FRONT BLACKS IN BACK
  • Schools in South Africa are segregated from desks, to bathrooms, to water fountains
  • At  school, blacks are out numbered and treated differently
  • We are told by the law to limit action between races
  • Within jobs in South Africa, blacks get paid less money but still have to work longer and harder shifts than the whites
  • The law cannot allow blacks to take over the work force in our factories
  • My boss still stands and watches the blacks while we work to make sure we don't mess anything up
  • As we travel outside of town to go to stores, we have to find alternate routes to avoid white neighborhoods
  • It is much more dangerous for us to travel at night
  • We have to be careful returning home from  school or work
  • In white neighborhoods, there are legalized signs up warning blacks that they are not welcomed
  • WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD NO BLACKS ALLOWED
  • BLACK ST.
  • Even though segregation is high in South Africa, our family has learned how to adapt to our communitiy
  • The government established separate public facilities for whites and blacks
  • We have to stay in our own areas when we are out in public
  • WHITE ST.
