In anger for not receiving an invitation to a party, Eris, goddess of discord, crashes the party and brings a golden apple 'for the fairest of them all'. Goddesses, Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite all claim that the apple is for themselves. Zeus decides that the handsome, mortal prince, named Paris, would choose who the apple should go to.
When Paris was deciding who to give the apple to, the goddesses began to bribe him so he would choose them. Hera promised him reign over the whole world, Aphrodite promised the most beautiful woman would fall in love with him, and Athena promised that Paris would win every war that he fought in. Paris chose Aphrodite's gift and gave her the apple.
Of course, the most beautiful woman in the world was Helen, queen of Sparta. Unfortunately, Helen was already married to Menelaus, king of Sparta. However, Paris didn't give up. He visited Sparta and with the help of Aphrodite, convinced Helen to run away with back to his homeland, Troy.
