  • Summary: This practice was challenged in the landmark Supreme Court case Engel v. Vitale. (1962). They challenge the First Amendment which says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” In Engel v. Vitale, the Court ruled that for public schools to hold official recitation of prayers violated the Establishment Clause.

  • The signifance of this case was that it challenge the way this case was built. it helped schools enourage its recitation in public schools and ruled it is unconstitutional for state officials to compose an official school prayer.
