- Kushwant wake up, we have to go to school
- School
- The author's grandmother used to wake him up in the morning to get him ready for school. She used to bathe and dress him up and while doing that she used to say her morning prayer is a monotonous sing-song voice hoping that the author would listen and learn it by heart, which he heard for her voice but never bothered to learn it.
- After bathing him, the author's grandmother fetched the author's wooden slate which she had already washed and plastered it with yellow chalk, a tiny earthen inkpot and a red pen, tie them all in a bundle hand it to him after which she served him breakfast they used to leave for school and the author's grandmother carried several stale chapatis for the village dogs.
- The author always went to school with his grandmother because the school was attached to the temple
- The priest taught them alphabets and the morning prayer. While the children sat in rows on either side of the verandah singing the alphabet or the prayer in a chorus, the author's grandmother sat inside reading the scriptures
- When they both had finished they'd walk back home.
- This time the village dogs met them at the temple door. They followed them to their home growling and fighting with each other for the chapattis they threw to them.
