  • New York Times Co. Vs. United States
  • The New York Times released a paper in June of 1971 that told of the Nixon Administration's interference in Vietnam. Nixon told them to take it down, and they did not, so he brought it to the court.
  • New York Times New Paper! President Nixon has been working behind the scenes in Vietnam!
  • That's Classified, take it down immediately!
  • Nixon believed that NYT was violating the first amendment law, freedom of the press. After the District and Appellate decisions, The S.C. picked up the case.
  • District and Appellate Court believe that the paper doesn't violate the first amendment.
  • I disagree! I am taking this to the Supreme Court.
  • The S.C. has come to a 6-3 vote that the NYT did not violate the Freedom of Press portion of the 1st amendment.
  • This case is important because it expanded the freedom of the press. It also helped decrease the amount of censorship the government could commit.
