Storyboard Text

  • Emperor Justinian
  • Justinian was a great emperor who reformed the Byzantine government to improve efficiency and get rid of corruption. Justinian also made major improvements in the areas of government, construction and law. He also changed laws to make them easier to understand, called the Justinian code.
  • Hello, my name is Justinian and I'm the emperor of Byzantium.
  • Constantinople
  • Constantinople was the largest city in the world. It was also a center of trade and cultural diversity because it was located on the bosporus. Constantinople also had the a huge stadium that could hold 60,000 people!
  • Hello, I'm from Egypt and I come here to trade.
  • Eastern Orthodox Church
  • The Eastern Orthodox Church had a patriarch controlling the church. The church also believed that the emperor was God's representative on Earth. The church also destroyed icons of Jesus and the saints.
  • Have you heard that people in the west have been praying to icons?
  • They have? This is an outrage, we must destroy all icons at once.
  • Imports Into Constantinople
  • Hi, we are from Egypt and we come to import grain.
  • The Plague
  • Oh no, the rats are escaping.
  • The plague, after Justinian's death, attacked again. The plague started when rats escaped from grain ships that came from Egypt. At the height of the plague, probably 10,000 people died everyday.
  • The End Of Byzantium
  • Oh no, the crusaders have attacked!
  • Many people came from all over the world to trade in Constantinople. Constantinople was in the best position for trade because it was located on the bosporus. They most likely traded stuff like metals, spices, animals, and grain.
  • After the plague broke out, the Crusaders attacked Constantinople. The Turks, who were muslims, took control of everything around Constantinople. The Turks eventually took control of Constantinople and the whole of the Byzantine Empire.
