Rainsford watched in awe as his plan resulted in the death of Ivan. As he hid behind a tree, Rainsford realized that there were still other people in the training room. Rainsford crept passed Zaroff and headed for the training area.
The sun had set by the time Rainsford reached the building. He crouched behind a bush and peered in the only window. What he saw angered him. Men were being taught how to hunt in cruel ways. Rainsford decided he had to free them.
Rainsford waited outside the window until the guards went to sleep. Very quietly, Rainsford helped the prisoners escape out the window. As a group, the men retreated to the woods to hunt for Zaroff.
The men set up a deadly trap as soon as they could. The men worked together until midnight. Rainsford found a cave where they could set up camp. They built a fire and watched the flames dance above the burning coals. Just before sundown, they heard a distant cry and knew that Zaroff had fallen victim to their trap.
Rainsford and his men found their trap successful when they reached the scene. Since Rainsford was not a barbaric person, he thought it was only right to give Zaroff a proper burial.
Later, the men discovered Zaroff's boat along the shore. Finally the men would be able to leave the island. Rainsford named himself captain and the group of men loaded the ship. They said goodbye to the island and set out to sea on their way home.
