  • " They are only ones who understand me .I am the only one who understands them. Four skinny trees with skinny necks and pointy elbows like mine" 
  • Esperanza compares the four skinny trees to herself who don't  belong  there.
  • Esperanza then emphasizes that the trees are important to her in a special meaning.
  • "Their strength is secret.They send ferocious roots beneath the ground".
  • "When I am too sad and too skinny to keep keeping, when I am a tiny thing agianst so many bricks, then it is I look at trees".
  • She describes how she feels when looking at the trees uses them to cope with agianst any problem of herself.
  • She also sees the trees as a mighty strength and she even compares herself to the trees because she feels that they are alike.
  • "When there is nothing left to look at on this street.Four who grew despite concrete".
  • Esperanza talks about the four skinny trees who grew and keep on staying to grow even though they were put there to stay just like Esperanza's home.
