The Lord granted
his Vassal a fief or estate
Peasants worked on the land estates
Most peasants were serfs. Serfs were not slaves, but they were not completly free. They could not leave the manor without the Lord's permission. If permission was granted, they could go.
The peasants did everything for the Lords. They had to work several days a week farming the Lord's lands. They were also forced to repair the Lords' roads, bridges, and fences. They also had to pay the Lord a fee when they got married.
After a very long time period of endless labor, the peasants were granted the permission to farm several acres of land for themsleves
The peasants became very independent. They learned how to provide for themselves. This varies from food, water, and clothing. Peasants never ventured out of their homes. Peasants also carried no knowledge.
