Storyboard Text

  • Soon after leaving Troy, Odysseus and his crew land near Ismarus the city of Cicones, who are allies of the Trojans and enemies of Odysseus. They kill 72 of Odysseus men driving the rest out to sea.
  • Leave the Island of Ismarus
  • Annotation Why are the Trojans enemies of Odysseus?
  • Annotation Ismarus and the land of the Lotus Eaters are both epic settings because they are mythical and exotic lands
  • We sailed on for nine days. "Upon the tenth we came to the coastline of the Lotus Eaters, who live upon that flower. We landed there to take on water."
  • Annotation  Do Odysseus and his crew know anything about the Lotus Eaters already? Are they allies?
  • "I sent out two picked men and a runner to learn what race of men that land sustained."
  • Annotation In the Percy Jackson movie, the lotus flowers are used to get Percy and his friends to stay forever at the casino
  • Try this flower, called Lotus!
  • "Those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return: they longed to stay forever"
  • "I (Odysseus) drove them, all three wailing, to the ship, tied them down under the rowing benches, and called the rest"
  • Athough, they (Lotus Eaters) "Showed no will to do us harm," we are leaving, get ready to board and set out to sea
  • "No one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home"
  • "Filling in to their places by the rowlocks my oarsmen dipped their long oars in the surf, and we moved out again on our sea faring."
  • Annotation Could Odysseus ever loose his hope of home? His hope of home seems so strong not even a Lotus Flower could make it disappear.
