Exposition: Montresor is introduced, and he talks about how he is upset with fortunado and wants to get his revenge for something he did. Fortunado is a wine taster, and Montresor's enemy.
Conflict: The conflict is first introduced when Montresor tells Fortunado that he has Amontillado, and asks him if he wants to try it. Fortunado also keeps coughing, so he drinks more wine, which gets him more intoxicated.
Rising Action: When Montresor is leading Fortunado through the catacombs to get to the wine. Fortunado is slightly intoxicated, and isn't completely sure what is going on around him.
Climax: When Montresor shackles Fortunado and starts building a wall around him. Fortunado doesn't think he is serious at first. But, Montresor then leaves him there to die, after listening to his screams for mercy.
Falling Action: Fortunado stops screaming, and all that Montresor can hear is the jingling of Fortunado's hat. Montresor also finishes sealing the wall, so no one will find Fortunado.
Resolution: Fortunado is left in the catacombs for the rest of his life.
