  • "Cold, scanty, and embarrassed in discourse... and yet somehow lovable." (1) This reveals that even though Utterson may seem a very cold and rigid person, he is actually a really nice person.

  • Bless God! Its Mr. Utterson
  • "I am a man to be trusted. Make a clean breast of this in confidence; and I make no doubt I can get you out of it." (13) Utterson thinks of himself as a man worthy of peoples trust, and that he only want to help his friends that are in sticky situations.

  • "Much as I desire to spare your masters feelings... I shall consider it my duty to break down that door." (31) Though he cares about Jekyll's feelings, Utterson is understanding though that something has to be done.

  • "At the sight of  Mr. Utterson, the house maid broke into hysterical whimpering; and the cook, crying, 'Bless God! Its Mr. Utterson,' ran forward as if to take him in her arms. (28) In the situation that worried all the servants, it shows that Utterson's presence bring comfort to people. 
  • "If he be Mr. Hyde," he had thought, "I shall be Mr.seek" When the situation calls for it, Utterson is determined to act in order to find out the truth.
