It’s mid to late August when summer was over but autumn was about to begin. Brother sometimes sits outside and remembers Doodle.
Doodle was born with a disability and couldn’t crawl until he was 3. Brother didn’t want to be associated with Doodle since kids would pick on him so he taught Doodle to walk when he was 6.
Brother pushed Doodle very hard. He taught Doodle how to do things like rowing a boat and swimming.
They are at home one day when they see a scarlet ibis lying dead on the ground. They note that the bird should not be anywhere near where it was and that it might have a disease.
Brother and Doodle go down to the swamp to swim. It starts lightning and Brother starts running back. Doodle can not keep up so he falls down and Brother keeps running.
When Brother goes back to Doodle, Doodle is lying on the ground with blood running down his neck. Doodle ended up dying because he was pushed too hard.
