  • The Fugitive Slave act
  • Secession
  •     Election of 1860
  • This act allowed slave owners from the south to recapture slaves that have escaped. This is the leading cause of war because it divided the north and the south and the south used the constitution for why the north had to follow this act.
  • Lincoln douglas debates
  • The south seceded from the union after debates about getting rid of slavery. On December 20, 1860, the south leaves the union and soon many other southern states will join. This led to war because the country is torn apart and on a path for certain war
  • Bleeding kansas
  • American presidential election on november 6, 1860 between Abraham Lincoln, john bell, stephen douglas, and john c. breckinridge. lincoln won and People were worried that lincoln was going to eliminate slavery and this caused some states to vow to leave the union.
  • Missouri compromise
  • lincol and douglas did not see eye to eye and and they competed for a seat in the senate. Lincoln was against slavery and douglas was for popular sovereignty. these views were divided due to opposing views that created sectionalism. 
  • due to the kansas-nebraska act, settlers in kansas fought each other and many violent events broke out. The act was a prelude to civil war. 
  • this compromise gave a strict division of what states would be slave and what states would be free. this caused disputes between the north and the south which cause great sectionalism.
