Storyboard Text

  • The smaller states will never agree to this...
  • Since we have a larger population, we should have more representation. I say we have a two house legislature.
  • Virginia Plan
  • That's not fair to the smaller states! What we really need is a one house legislature that has equal representation or the smaller states will never have a say in the government!
  • New Jersey Plan
  • The larger states won't agree at all...
  • Let's compromise; we can have a bicameral legislature with each house based on one plan. The upper house will have equal representation and the lower house will be based on population.
  • This isn't too bad...
  • The Great Compromise
  • Federalists
  • Wealthy and well-educated people are the best suited to be the leaders of the new government.
  • The government should be run by ordinary citizens! They will understand the needs of average people.
  • Ratification Debate
  • Anti-Federalists
  • We do not need a Bill of Rights. If we split the government into three separate branches, it will prevent the other branches from abusing their power.
  • A strong national government will take too much power away from the states! We need a Bill of Rights to protect the liberties of the people!
  • I'd rather cut off my right hand than sign a Constitution with no Bill of Rights!
  • After many, many long days of arguing, the Federalists promised an addition of a Bill of Rights (which made the Anti-Federalists happy) and a completely new government was formed (which made the Federalists happy). James Madison drafted ten amendments to the Constitution that become the U.S. Bill of Rights.
