In May and June of 1863, Major General Ulysses S. Grant’s armies attacked Vicksburg, trapping the Confederate army. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after a long attack This was the ending of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war.
Vicksburg was the last major Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River; therefore, capturing it completed the second part of the Northern strategy, the Anaconda Plan.
Total war is warfare that includes any and all civilian-associated resources as legitimate military targets, mobilizes all of the resources of society to fight the war, and gives priority to warfare over all other needs. Sherman's March to the Sea, was a military campaign of the American Civil War conducted through Georgia from November 15 to December 21, 1864 by Maj. Gen. Sherman of the Union Army and was part of his total war campaign.
