We, the free state, want slave trade to end immediately!
We, the Northern state, think that slaves should not be counted in our population because of taxes. We do NOT want slaves to count for representation.
We, the Southern state, think slaves should be counted as people for representation in Congress, but not for taxes.
Slave trade should last forever. We see it as a vital way of life and want it to continue.
We want slave trade to continue and you want it to end, so it can last until 1808.
We don't think slaves should be counted as people but you do, so they can count as 3/5 of a person.
We, the big states, want proportional representation! Because we have a larger population, it's not fair that we only get one vote.
The Virginia Plan calls for the government to separate into three branches. It will also allow the larger states to more representation in Congress due to their population.
The New Jersey Plan can also divide the government into three parts. Every state would get equal representation in Congress, no matter the population size.
We, the small states, want equal representation. We need the New Jersey Plan because without equality, the large states overpower the small states.
Since we believe in equal representation and you want proportional representation, we can combine both of our visions into the Great Compromise.
That is where the House of Representatives satisfies the Virginia Plan because each state is represented according to its population. The Senate satisfies the New Jersey Plan because each state will have two senators no matter the size.
