Yay! I have won the election... but what if the South secedes?
NORTH AND SOUTH DIFFERENCES
The South wants slavery and strong state governments.
The North wants to ban slavery and have a strong central government.
Sectionalism means the people put the needs of their local areas or states, above the needs of the country, which made things a lot harder for the US.
I don't really like the Missouri Compromise, but it will work for now.
After Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860 and became president, the South was worried that he would ban slavery, and so they began to secede from the Union.
COMPROMISE OF 1850
This could cause a lot of opposition, but I think it could hold the country together.
The North and South agreed on almost nothing. They didn't agree on slavery, government, or banks.
FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT
I moved to the North to escape slavery. I thought I was safe. I don't know where to go now...
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a desperate attempt to keep the peace and balance between free and slaves states by adding Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. It did not last long.
The Compromise of 1850 updated the fugitive slave law, admitted California as a free state, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Utah would be decided by popular sovereignty, abolished slave trade in DC, and gave away some of Texas territory for 10 million dollars.
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed as part of the Compromise of 1850, and forced citizens, even in free states to help capture and return slaves to their owners.
