We did our projects on magnesium oxide aka Mg2+O2-->2MgO.
Magnesium symbol is Mg, and its atomic number is 12, and Its mass number is 24.31. It is also in group 2 which is the beryllium group and period 3. It is cation and metal with 2 valence electrons. Lastly, it has 12 protons, neutrons, and electrons
Oxygen symbol is O, and its atomic number is 8, and It's mass number is 16. It is also in group 8 which is the iron group and period 2. It is an anion and nonmetal with 6 valence electrons. Lastly, it has 8 protons, neutrons, and electrons
A Covalent bond is formed by the sharing of electrons. It's only between nonmetallic elements of similar electronegativity. It is formed by sharing electron pairs. They are also not conductors at any state. Magnesium has 2 electrons and Oxygen has 2 and they both lose them. The result for magnesium oxide is Magnesium monoxide
An ionic bond is a bond formed between two ions. It is made up of a metal and a nonmetal. Magnesium loses 2 electrons and Oxygen gains 2 electrons to form an octet the ionic bond between ions results from the electrostatic attraction of opposite charges; this forms an ionic bond. The result is magnesium oxide.
