Storyboard Text

  • Foreshadowing
  • Cheers to your long life!
  • Irony
  • Cough, cough, cough!
  • Symbolism
  • When they are drinking wine and Montresor cheers to Fortunato's long life. This is foreshadowing that Fortunato will soon die.
  • Mood
  • When they are in the catacombs, Montresor says he wants to turn back because of Fortuanto's cough; but Fortunato refuses. Fortunato then says that he shall not die of a cough. This is ironic because he won't end up dying of a cough, but of something else.
  • Tone
  • The trowel is an example of symbolization because it gives a hint of how Montresor is going to murder Fortunato later in the story.
  • Imagery
  • The mood of the story is  dark and eerie. It is set in the catacombs- with bones. The bones give a creepy feeling off.
  • The tone of this story is kind of light-hearted because Montresor uses a lot of reverse psychology on  Fortunato. He says he is a great wine taster, acts like he is concerned about his cough, and pretends to be his friend. For most of the story, it is all fun and games for Fortunato.
  • In Cask of Amontillado, Montresor is describing the house that he is taking Fortunato through: "I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suits of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase..." (85). This is an example of imagery because he is telling us exactly what he is seeing.
