Zaroff tells us a lot about his past in his first altercation with Rainsford at the mansion. He tells us he killed his first bear at age 10, he commanded a division of the Cossack Cavalry, and he has read all of Rainsford´s books.
Relationship with Rainsford
Zaroff talks in a ¨Cultivated voice with great pleasure. He has a face of an arisocrat with a military mustache.¨ The way Zaroff explains himself is cocky. For example, ¨It would be impossible to tell you how many animals i've killed.¨
Zaroff's Hunting Styles
Zaroff thinks hunting people is totally fine. He says, ¨I never grow bored now.¨ His main reasoning or claim for doing this is stated on page 102, ¨Life is for the strong to be lived by the strong. The weak were put here to give the strong pleasure.¨
The Defeat and Death
Zaroff´s relationship with Rainsford is very strange. Zaroff greets Rainsford by saying, ¨Welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford.¨ Also he told him he has ¨read all of your books about hunting.¨ He ¨stares at Rainsford¨ while they are eating probably trying to see if Rainsford would be a good hunt.
At the first of the hunt Zaroff plays with Rainsford by "blowing smoke into the air and walking carelessly away from the tree." Also, everytime something goes wrong Zaroff brings extra backup with his dogs and Ivan.
According to Zaroff's actions throughout the hunt he most likely loses the hunt because of overconfidence. He could have killed Rainsford at first but just walked away. He died because Rainsford beat him in the final battle in the bedroom.
