After several weeks of traveling, I finally arrived at my cousin's plantation!
My cousin talked proudly about each and every one of his slaves, his "belongings" helping him get rich by planting and harvesting the cash crops (tobacco)
As we rode by, his vast fields of crops, I noticed there were thousands of slaves in the distance
Although, we had slaves in the Middle Colonies aswell, he had about 4 times the amount that worked on our farms.
To get to his house, we went by a slave establishment. Since there were so many slaves on his land, I wondered how he was able to house them all. I asked him if he would give me a tour and he agreed.
As I entered the small room, a horrible stench filled my nose. On the beds, I saw indentured servants and slaves alike laying on the beds trying to catch some sleep. I was horrified. The slave housing at our farm wasn't as bad as how it was here.
I realized that slavery was a very important part of the Southern colonies' plantations when I saw even more slaves in front of his house.
