The Miraculous Rise of Steph Curry By Marcus Thompson II
Theme Development # 1
"Curry worked so hard in the off-season. He trained 100 percent throughout the whole summer. He's now a faster and stronger player and is ready to compete." Thompson (34)
Progress report #3 : Theme by David Chen
Theme Development #2
"Much like Curry, Joseph is only 6'3 , 160 pounds when he was in college. But he was drafted by the Toronto Raptors, due to his good shooting and balling skills that he developed in college. " Thompson (35)
The theme of the book is the idea that handwork will help people to overcome natural (physical) disadvantages. The picture shows Curry, who is a short and week basketball player compare to other players in the NBA, working hard on his game. He is trying to put in the work , so that he can score many points in the game, even though he has physical disadvantages.
Theme Development #3
"Curry guarded Lebron James, who is the best player in the cavs team, for most of the time. Lebron is a million times bigger than Curry, but Curry really puts in effort in the defensive end to lock down Lebron." Under Curry's hastle defense, Lebron only score 4 in the last quarter." Thompson (147)
Curry was a weak player when he was in high school. He was only 5'11 as a high school player. This disadvantage definitely effected his offense when playing against strong defenders, and it also limited his chance of making to college teams. Curry didn't give up, instead, he worked much harder in the off-season. He trained 6 hours a day, and was confident that this hard work will pay off. Finally, by the start of the season, he was much stronger and averaged a career high in all stats. This scene developed the theme, and proved the idea that hardwork will help people to overcome physical disadvantages.
The author here, is using the characterization of Cory Joseph to express the theme. The author is comparing Joseph with Curry. He categorized Joseph as the same type of player like Curry. Indeed, Joseph has a huge physical disadvantage. He is smaller and shorter than Curry, but he worked even harder on his ball handling skill and shots. That is the key to success and it's what helped him to make it to the NBA. He is working hard on his ball handling skill in the picture above.
The author used exaggeration to show how much of a physical disadvantage Curry has, when guarding Lebron. The picture shows the size difference when comparing Curry and Lebron, it also shows, Curry putting in hard work on defense when playing against player who's much bigger than him. This matched up with the theme, because Curry was able to lock down Lebron with his hustling and aggression on defense. He worked so hard and he's hard work is paid off. That kind of attitude helped Curry to overcome his physical disadvantages.
I think Curry will keep working hard untill his career end. I am making this prediction based on the quote I have above. It explains how hardworking a guy Curry is, he already made to the NBA as the 7th pick in the draft, but he didn't stop where he was, instead, he worked even harder to build his body and perfect his skills. The outcome is great for him, where he improves by a lot in all of his stats every year. This working ethic will be with him for so long and it will sure help him to become the best player of all time.
"Curry never stopped working hard after he got into the NBA, he got stronger every season, and he's stats improved every year since he got into the league." Thompson (241)
