  • We don't want you in our group, you are horrible at this class! Why would we want to fail because of you?!

  • *feels anxious before road test, so she listens to music for comfort*

  • "I know I have diabetes so I really shouldn't eat this birthday cake right now..."
  • "You will be okay, maybe you can do something to bring up your grade."
  • Projection is when people subconsciously employ in order to deal with difficult emotions or feelings. For example, you are mad at your friends for them not putting you in their group, but, instead you play it off and act like you do not need them.
  • Displacement
  • Reaction formation is when one expresses the opposite of how one truly feels. For example, you are about to take your road test and you are really anxious so instead of pacing around stressing out, you play your favorite music to relieve the stress.
  • Sublimation
  • I AM SO MAD!!!
  • Denial is defined as refusing to accept or believe something, or a statement to contradict someone or something else. For example, your favorite cake is put out at a birthday party, but you know you cannot have it. You are sitting there debating whether it is okay to have it or not.

  • I am okay. I will just take the stairs....

  • Displacement is the redirecting of one's feelings towards another person or object. For example, you get a bad grade on a test you studied really hard for and end up getting a bad grade in the end. To take out your anger, you throw all your things on the ground to relieve your anger.

  • Sublimation is the channeling of one's frustration towards a different goal. For example, you are mad about breaking up with your boyfriend and you decide to take out your anger on the football because you are mad, but also want to win in the game.

  • Repression is pushing thoughts out of conscious awareness. For example, when you were younger, you almost drowned in a swimming pool from jumping off the diving board. Years later, you were at a pool party and everyone was using the diving board. You are afraid to use it due to the traumatic experience you had years ago.
