In the Akobo desert, Salva encounters dehydrated dying and dead men and some people are giving them water and some are not, " 'No,Salva,'he murmured. 'You are to small, and not strong enough yet." (P.580)
Also in the Akobo Desert, Salva's Uncle is tied to a tree and shot by men of the enemy tribe to Salva's tribe, "When the men had finished their looting, they picked up Uncle's gun. Then they walked to the tree where Uncle was tied up ... Three shots rang out. Then the men ran away." (P.63)
Salva was in a refugee camp in Kenya when the government collapsed. The new rulers shut down the refugee camps by forcing the refugees out with soldiers and into the Gilo river which was full of crocodiles. Also, the soldiers shot at them.
