"Is it a visitor rapping on the door? Or merely the wind?"
"Who is out here rapping on my chamber door?"
The narrator hear a rapping at the door and thinks it is his lost love Lenore.
The narrator hears the rapping continuing and starts thinking of what it could be.
The narrator goes outside and looks for who is outside his door, but no one is there.
He thinks nothing is there but then he sees a raven perched on a bust above his door. He thinks this is a sign that Lenore is coming back, so he asks some questions to him but he only answers with "Nevermore."
"What is the lordly name?"
The narrator finally asks if Lenore is coming back but he still answers with "Nevermore."
"Will Lenore come back?"
He is angreied with the raven's answer so he tells him to go back where he came from. The raven just sits and never left.
