Direct: narration states the trait of the character

Thoughts: the character's thoughts and emotions reveal their personality
"Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction." (pg 3)
This quote tells that Rainsford is determined because he doesn't give up when he falls into the sea, he swam until his reached his goal of getting to land.
Effect on others: how other characters react to and how they think of the character reveals the character's personality
"It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home." (pg 4)
These quotes show that Rainsford is opinionated and stubborn because Whitney shared her ideas about hunting and Rainsford just rejected them, and told her she was wrong.
Actions: the character's actions/actual movements and behaviors reveal their personality
"A twenty-two, that's odd. It must have been a fairly large animal too. The hunter had his nerve with him to tackle it with a light gun. It's clear the brute put up a fight." (pg 3)
This quote shows that is smart because he uses the information of where the shots came from to know that there must be land in that direction to swim to.
Looks: the character's physical appearance reveals ideas about their personality
This quote shows that Rainsford is approachable because General Zaroff shakes his hand, greets him, and tells Ivan to put away his gun. He is not seen as a threat and is welcomed right away.
Rainsford is very observant because just by looking at the underbrush and finding an empty cartridge, he was able to tell a lot of information about what happened. He concluded the gun type, size of the animal, and how many shots it took to take it down.
"He carried khaki hunting clothes , a haversack of food, a leather sheath containing a long-bladed knife." (pg 12) This quote shows that Rainsford is prepared because he takes and uses all the tools that were given to him.
