We have to move forward. Sorry Samuel, you were a great kid.
Help me! Momma, MOMMA!
Somebody come back. I can do it, I can!
Troops I found one. Take him back to the base!
No please, don't hurt me!
Samuel is a kid soldier fighting in the Uganda Civil War. He is injured and his men decide that they have to leave him behind, taking his gun and all ammo.
After the other soldiers begin to advance, Samuel is left behind, shouting for help. He tries to convince them that he can continue and will not hold them back.
I chose this scene because it establishes an early tone for the book. Also it foreshadows a possible solution or purpose for the overall plot. Finally, it has me anxious to read more to find out what happens.
