If they all had controlled their feelings, their wouldn't be much conflict. They became the monsters because their feelings took over them. A man's car starts, and the neighbors accuse him of being other worldly.
The group sees a weird figure in the sky, causing Charlie to grab his gun. Charlie shoots Van Hern accidentally. His lights go on, and he becomes a suspect.
While Charlie is being blamed, he exclaims that Tommy is the alien. Tommy predicted what was going to happen.
The aliens arrive, and show the mob the true monsters. Themselves.
