"Within the wall thus exposed by the displacing of the bones, we perceived a still interior crypt or recess... for no especial use..." (Poe 5) This describes the grave that Montresor makes for Fortunato.
Foreboding: Coat of Arms
"You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was." Montresor is emotionally isolated; he is not rich, respected, admired, or happy, and is jealous of Fortunato, who is.
Decay: Catacombs/ Vaults
" In pace requescat!" (Poe 7) Montresor's reponse to his revenge against Fortunato is joyful.
Supernatural: Fortunato's Sobriety
"A huge human foot... the foot crushes a serpent whose fangs are embedded in the heel." (Poe 4) "Nemo me impune lecessit." (Poe 4) Montresor's coat of arms foreshadows how he will get revenge on anyone who tries to cross him.
Nemo me impune lecessit
"It hangs like moss upon the vaults... The drops of moisture trickle among the bones." (Poe 4) The eerie scene of the vaults shows that it is old and crumbling.
"I had scarcely laid the first tier of the masonry when I discovered that the intoxication of Fortunato had in a great measure worn off" (Poe 6) Fortunato was very drunk, but when he realized the Montresor was burying him, he sobered up instantly.
