A long time ago, there was a king named Antiochus. He was the king of Israel but he did not like the Jewish people because they did not do what he did.
The king told his guards to go into the temple to make a mess and they ruined everything. They even knocked down the jars of oil that were used to light the Menorah. The guards made the Jews feel angry.
A man named Judah Maccabee wanted to stop the king from doing this. Judah wanted him to leave Israel. Judah's followers were afraid to do this because the kings soldiers had big weapons and they had nothing.
Eventually, Judah's followers chased Antiochus and his guards out of Israel.
The jews went back to Jerusalem to clean up the mess they made in the temple. They made a brand new Menorah. They were worried that they were not going to be able to light it because there was only enough oil for one day. They lighted it up anyways and surprisingly it lit for eight days.
The Jews prayed to God and thanked him for the miracles. Now, every year the Jews celebrate Hanukkah and light the Menorah for eight days and celebrate the miracles that happened long ago.
