Coercive Acts/Intolerable Acts: June 2nd, 1774- These laws restricted the colonists’ civil rights, including the right to trial by jury. The colonial governments had band together to fight the Intolerable Acts. Parliament was fed up with the colonists actions and when they destroyed the chests of tea belonging to the British East India Company, they saw it as destruction of property.
Declaration of Independence: July 4th, 1776- The Declaration argued that the British government did not look after the interests of the colonists and included a list of abuses by King George III. It set forth the colonists’ beliefs about the rights of individuals. It claimed that the purpose of a government is to protect the rights of the people.
