As Dani's first day of her new school consists of nothing but cruel or unfamiliar faces, she dreads each step she takes and the start of each new class. Dani walked into her mathematics class obviously not knowing anyone, so she sat in the nearest vacant seat. She ended up near a guy named Jon who seemed rather like a nobody, since he was the only one not lost in conversation, just like herself.
As Dani's math class came to an end, she began to hold a conversation with the Jon kid next to her, brightening her day just a little bit. As she stressed over how she was gonna get to lunch, Jon offered to guide her since he was heading there as well. Dani felt a little more relaxed as this unfamiliar face offered to help her out.
I chose this scene because moving to America was so supposed to positively affect Dani and her family, but as Dani entered her first day of school nothing really went her way until she meant Jon. Jon allowed her to feel relaxed because he understood what she was going through and how cruel people are at the school. I feel that some weight is taken off the shoulders of Dani, which is why it is significant to the development of the story and Dani's life.
