  • Esperanza struggles with her identity and wants to move away from her home; she feels alone in a society filled with unfair expectations.

  • Conflict
  • Esperanza moves into the house on mango street, but it isn't what she thought she'd get. She wants a house she can proudly point at when someone asks which house is hers.
  • Exposition 
  • Sally, is Esperanza's friend. She didn't want to play with Esperanza in the garden, so she stayed on the curb talking to Tito and his friends. When Esperanza got back, the boys took sally's keys and wouldn't give them back until sally kissed each of them, Esperanza was mad, but Sally didn't seem to care.

  • Rising Action
  • Sally lied. Esperanza went to a carnival with Sally, a boy grabbed Esperanza by the arm, said "I love you, Spanish girl, I love you." and kissed her. She couldn't do anything but cry. They all lied, the books & magazines, everything told it wrong.
  • Climax
  • Alicia tells Esperanza she lives on 4006 Mango, but Esperanza shakes her head, ashamed. Alicia says "Like it or not you are Mango Street, and one day you'll come back too." Esperanza says "Not me. Not until somebody makes it better."
  • Falling Action
  • Sandra likes to tell stories, she tells them after the mailman says, Here's your mail. This is the story about a girl who didn't want to belong. Sandra remembers most about Mango Street, the house she belongs but does not belong to. Friends and neighbors will not know she has gone away to come back.
