Montressor wants to get revenge on Fortunato, who is a wine expert, for insulting him. He tells Fortunato that he thinks he knows where to find a special type of wine, called Amontillado.
I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts.
Montressor brings Fortunato down to the catacombs where he claims to have the Amontillado.
Luchresi cannot tell Amontillado from sherry.
The vaults are insufferably damp andare encrusted with nitre.
Montressor and Fortunato make their way deeper underground. Montressor offers to turn back but Fortunato wants to continue onwards. Montressor makes sure Fortunato is still drunk by giving him more wine.
*Cough! Cough! Ack!*
Drink more wine... it will help the cough.
Montressor chains Fortunato to the wall.
Fortunato screams, laughs, and thinks that it is a good joke as Montressor bricks up the opening. Fortunato is still intoxicated and does not fully comprehend what is happening.
Ha! ha! ha! –he! he! he! –a very good joke, indeed!AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
In pace requiescat!
Montressor feels sickened and finishes the wall. He hears the bells and says "Rest in Peace!"
