  • Bruno is a 9 year old German boy who we see as the main character in the story so far. He loves to explore and try to find new things. Though when they move to the new house he expresses that he does not like it.

  • Loves Bruno on the inside but outside expresses her feelings differently
  • Father has recently promoted to Commandant in the German Military, and with that his family moved to Out With. He seems to be in his mid 40's and likes his promotion.

  • Shmuel hates the camp
  • Shmuel is very skinny
  • Maria is the family's maid and seems to be young. She is slowly becoming a friend of Bruno. She agrees with father on the decision to move because he took her in when her mother got sick and died.

  • Gretel is a German girl who is almost 13 and does not mind it at outwith. She misses her friends like Bruno but is not as protected as Bruno is when it comes to the truth. She has a better understanding of whats going on around her.

  • Shmuel is a European Jew in a concentration camp. He is the same age as Bruno. He becomes friends with Bruno during the book and is given food and a friendship by Bruno. Helps Bruno understand the horrors he's hidden from. 
  • Is glad to have met Bruno

  • Mother seems to be in her forties as the book describes her. She supported the move to Out-With at first and then was against it once Bruno and Gretel got lice. She seems to be taking interest in her drinking.
  • Starting to drink to take thoughts away
  • Mother is having a lot more afternoon naps
