Bruno is a 9 year old German boy who we see as the main character in the story so far. He loves to explore and try to find new things. Though when they move to the new house he expresses that he does not like it.

Shmuel is a European Jew in a concentration camp. He is the same age as Bruno. He becomes friends with Bruno during the book and is given food and a friendship by Bruno. Helps Bruno understand the horrors he's hidden from.
