One day he was perfectly content, playing at home, having three best friends for life, sliding down banisters, trying to stand on his tip toes to see right across Berlin, and now he was stuck here in this cold, nasty house
Bruno is very spry and adventurous.
She had a large collection of dolls positioned on shelves around her room that stared at Bruno when he went inside and followed him around, watching whatever he did.
She has a better understanding of why the family moved to "Out-With"
Gretel is very immature.
"Good morning little man," said Kotler, reaching out- and quite appallingly- ruffling his hand through Bruno's hair, a gesture that made Bruno want to push him to the ground and jump up and down on his head.
Lieutenant Kotler is somewhat kind to the children.
He is nasty to everyone else on the camp.
Being the young and adventurous child he is, Bruno always wants to explore. He is very curious and excited. He seems unhappy with his new house and can’t wait to get back to his home in Berlin, but as father puts they are staying there for the “foreseeable future”. Bruno will have to see how he can explore. Maybe, he will start with those strange people on the other side of the fence.
Pavel is a risk-taker.
He always wanted to be a doctor.
Known as the “Hopeless Case” by Bruno, Gretel is very immature for her age. She becomes very skeptical of Bruno when he talks about his friend “Shmuel” who turns out to be his imaginary friend. We also learn about her love interest with the older man and soldier, Lieutenant Kotler. We have yet to learn anything else about her.
Shmuel lives on the other side of the fence.
As I read on and on, I start to dislike Lieutenant Kotler, and I think the same thing happens to Bruno. Right from as we met him, he seemed very snarky to everyone. He is a soldier and works for Bruno and Gretel’s father. He is only eighteen years old and seems to have a love interest, Mother. We also can see that Gretel has a little crush on him.
Her mouth opened but froze there for a moment, as if she was scared of all of the things she might say if she allowed herself to begin.
The things that stick out most to me about Pavel is the way he acts. He is very timid and always seems to be kind of scared. I was very surprised when he took the risk of helping Bruno after his incident on the tyre swing. I wish he was treated better by everyone on the camp, he seems to have the sweetest soul. I hope after the camps were liberated he pursued his dream of becoming a doctor.
"He sighed and seemed to consider it for quite a long time before answering,".
Shmuel and Bruno are best friends. He lives on the other side of the fence an always seems to be sad. The one thing that Bruno notices about Shmuel is that he is constantly getting smaller and smaller. Shmuel is incredibly intelligent and witty. We read that his father magically disappears in the book I have a feeling he was put in a gas chamber.
Bruno was sure that he had never seen a skinnier or sadder boy in his life but decided that he had better talk to him.
Bruno and Shmuel are best friends.
Maria is the maid of the house. In the beginning of the book, Bruno seems to find her to be annoying and peckish. But throughout the story, we can see that Bruno seems to understand her and like her. Bruno’s father had helped her mother and had told him to never ever disrespect him. She seems to be very sweet.
