Nwoye always feared his father's temper. Sometimes Okonkwo would beat his son for not meeting ridiculous expectations. Often times, Okonkwo beat him just to protect his own pride.
Years later, in the land on Okonkwo's mother, Missionaries came. Nwoye was so intrigued by their message that one day he decided to stay with them. When he got home, his father beat him for not telling him where he was. Nwoye decided that he had had enough and ran from his home without looking back.
One day, a very old friend of Okonkwo named Obierika went to see Nwoye because he heard that he was in the village. When he tried to see him, he was met with much resistance from the missionaries. When he finally was able to see him, he asked him how his father was doing. To this, Nwoye replied something like he is not my father anymore. When Obierika asked him to explain why he was with the missionaries, he said something like I am with them now.
