  • US ships came over and brought diseases and kill a lot of the people that were there. 300,000 to 40,000.
  • 1893
  • President William McKinley signed a joint resolution annexing the islands, much like the manner in which Texas joined the Union in 1845.
  • 1894
  • King Kalakaua was strongly nationalistic. He also allowed sugar to enter the USA tax free. He also did the Bayonet Constitution
  • 1898
  • Queen Liliuokalani surrendered under a protest. But before all of that she put away the Bayonet Constitution
  • So the people tried to overthrow the Queen Liliuokalani and get the America in on it to help them become free. Without Presidential approval, marines stormed the islands, and the American minister to the islands raised the stars and stripes in Honolulu.
  • President William McKinley signed a joint resolution annexing the islands, much like the manner in which Texas joined the Union in 1845. Hawaii remained a territory until granted statehood as the fiftieth state in 1959.
