Mama's plant was a joke to the family, but to her it meant hope that one day sunlight and happiness would come to her family. Her plant represented her american dream; to have a big house with a garden and a yard for her grandchildren to play in and over all,a place where her family could get to together.
Ruth and Mama talk about Walter and Beneatha, and Ruth suddenly faints.
