The Norwegian farmworker Osten Ostensen wanted to move to America. The European potato failure had just affected him, so he is poor. Furthermore, his "boss" just got some new industrialized farm equipment, so he gets much less pay. His cousin also wrote him that you could land in America for nothing.
Osten collected his belongings, including his money (he did not want to be accused of being a beggar), and headed to town to fill out some paperwork so that he could travel to America.
He also made sure he was not sick, for he did not want to be turned away.
