  • During the financial crisis King Louie called the Estates General meeting trying to fix the crisis. All three estates voted by order and made the decision to keep taxing the third estate(poor estate). this was a move away from democracy because the voting was unfair.
  • The March on Versailles
  • TThird Estate delegates in June 1789 locked themselves in the meeting place of a tennis court and declared themselves the national assembly. the national assembly took a pledge to never separate and create a constitution. This was a step towards democracy because now there is grounds for a democracy.
  • The Reign of Terror
  • On July 14th, 1789 the rumor of foreign nation troops coming to the capital emerged. hearing this 800 Parisians gathered outside the Bastille or prison demanding weapons. when the soldiers said no the Parisians revolted and the French Revolution began. this was a step towards democracy because now people are revolting
  • The Rise of Napoleon

  • Six thousand women marched 13 miles on October 5th shouting "Bread" and demanding to see the King. The woman once they met the King demanded he return to live in Paris. The King went through with his promise and moved to Paris. this was a step towards democracy because the people made the King comply to their commands

  • Robespierre quickly became the leader of France and believed a "republic virtue" could be reached through criminals losing their heads. He would execute 1000's using a guillotine for any reason that was deemed illegal. This was a move away from democracy because everyone's voice was silenced and people were being executed on the streets.

  • After Robespierre was executed Napoleon rose to power. Napoleon was on a high after winning many battles before and crowned himself as the Emperor. He also reformed prices, built roads, and created a very powerful military. With this military Napoleon started taking over other nations and gained major military success. this was a step towards democracy at first but later Napoleon wanted more and more and the democracy eventually died.
