Snippet and Anna were the best of friends. They were 12-year-old maids in the grand house of George Williamson, an old and retired actor. Snippet and Anna came from very different backgrounds. Anna was a foundling brought up to be a servant girl in an orphanage. Snippet was a beggar girl Master George had taken in. She had dark hair and emerald green eyes. Anna had blonde hair and blue eyes. Their personalities were different too. Snippet was a dutiful and quiet girl who loved to sew. Anna was stubborn and loud and loved to talk. They worked hard everyday to please Master George. Every night in bed they would hide under the covers and giggle and share secrets. To Snippet, life as a maid seemed much more easier with a best friend.
One day, Master George's sister, Lady Williamson, a seamstress famous for her designs for little girls, came to visit for a few days. Anna and Snippet were surprised because they never knew that Master George had a sister. They discovered that Lady Williamson was very kind and generous. She gave the girls lovely handmade dresses that she had made herself. Snippet was fascinated at how beautifully the dresses were sewed. Lady Williamson gave her a sewing lesson and ended up becoming fond of Snippet. Snippet became fond of her too. Anna was jealous of their new friendship, but Snippet didn't notice. Lady Williamson continued to give them more fancy dresses. Snippet was admired them and thanked her gratefully for the gifts. Anna didn't say a single word.
A few days later, Lady Williamson said goodbye and left. Snippet missed her dreadfully. Anna was glad that she was gone so that she and Snippet could go back to their old life. But Snippet, who now viewed Lady Williamson as her inspiration to become a dressmaker, talked of nothing but her for days. It was very irritating for Anna, who was annoyed that Snippet could be so easily admiring.
About a week later, a letter from Lady Williamson came to the house asking if Master George would let Snippet become her apprentice so that she could help her with her sewing. Master George, Anna, and Snippet were very shocked. Master George asked Snippet if she would like to become the apprentice of Lady Williamson. Snippet reluctantly said yes. Anna was bewildered. She tried to be happy for Snippet and her opportunity to have a new life, but she wasn't very convincing.
Everything was arranged. Snippet was going to leave in three days' time. Anna spent her time busying herself with work while Snippet packed her things and wondered why she was avoiding her. Didn't Anna want to spend the last of their time together? Finally, on the night before Snippet was about to leave, she exploded at Anna and demanded her to tell her what was the matter. Anna suddenly burst into tears and admitted that she was jealous and that she would miss her very much. Snippet cried and gave her a big hug, saying that she would miss her so much too. They made a pledge to stay in touch and stay best friends always.
The next morning, a car came to take Snippet to Lady Williamson's house. She was all ready. She said goodbye to Master George and gave Anna a huge hug. She hugged her back and told her to be brave and don't forget her. Snippet said she would try to be brave and that she would never, ever forget her best friend in the world Snippet got into the car. As it began to drive further into the distance, she looked back at Anna. She was smiling and crying at the same time, feeling happy for her best friend.
