  • Jonas was ready to be called for his job but they skipped his number. He was scared that he did something wrong and would not get his job. "Twenty," he heard her voice say clear. "Pierre." She skipped me." Jonas's was insanely anxious and upset he was skipped and a little embarrassed.
  • Chapter 12-13
  • Jonas was surprised by being named the Giver after his long and anxious wait to get his job. Jonas is scared that he does not have the courage or bravery to carry out with this job. "You've been greatly honored" his parents tell him.
  • Chapter 14-15
  • It is Jonas's first day and he is ready to take on the challenges after a lot of thought. The other receiver tells him about his memories. He gives Jonas the memory of snow and the thrill of sledding down a mountain. 
  • Chapter 16-17
  • Jonas in this chapter gets his first memory of color. He expresses his excitement by enthusiastically saying he could see the color red. He got the colors from the sled memory so he said "I saw it in the sled."

  • "The colors of carnage were grotesquely bright." Jonas got 2 bad memories. One was war and the other was him breaking a leg. This was upsetting him and putting him in uncomfortable pain. The broken leg one made him upset but he still wanted to carry on but the war one almost made him quit due to the horrors it brought him.
  • Jonas was upset and did not want to go back to the horrors of the memories. The giver was taking it easy on him and was giving calm and soothing memories and was trying to gain back his trust and even gave him his favorite memory which was of Christmas. Jonas was still questioning if he should stay. When he was home on a holiday he saw ashier his best friend playing a shooting game with little kids. This reminded him of war and the horrors that came with it.
