Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation
Most states wrote a constitution for two reasons, to spell out the rights of a citizen and to limit the power of the government. Several states including Virginia wrote a Bill of Rights as well which was a list of freedoms that the government promised to protect.
You can't take our farms from us!!!!!!
Soon, the people of the states could vote! To vote, the voter had to be over 21 years old, male, white, own some amount of land, and pay some amount of taxes.
The Articles of Confederation was approved in 1777. It created a central government for the states of america. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation caused conflict between states, money problems (no central currency making it difficult to trade), and made us weak causing other countries to take advantage of us.
Unfortunately, the economy for farmers fell into a depression. In response to this depression, Daniel Shay a farmer from Massachusetts organized an uprising in 1786. More than 1,000 farmers took part in the rebellion, attacking courthouse and preventing them from seizing farms.
Soon after Shays' rebellion, the Congress realized that the Articles of Confederation weren't working. Congress called for a convention first intended to only revise the Articles of Confederation, but it was soon realized a whole new government would have to be created.
