The main characters in the novel are Toswiah, Cameron, and their mother and father. In the exposition of the story, they live a happy and normal life in Denver. Toswiah even tells her parents, " I love my life now, its perfect."
During the rising action her father becomes a witness of a crime and they are forced to "leave Denver in the middle of the night, " and change their names and identities.
Throughout the rising action, they arrive at the safe house and start to find things they like. For example they find track. Track for them is kind of like freedom. Toswiah loves track and thinks " Its her thing, and nobody can take that away."
At the climax, one normal morning, was not so normal. Toswiah's dad, "picked up a shard of it and jammed it into his wrist, saying he was ready to die now." Everybody was shocked and didn't know what to do. This was all chaos for the family.
