  • Mr Tan's arrival in Singapore
  • Hi I am Tan Tock Seng. I received news from Major Farquhar and said that the British had established a trading port in Singapore, so I decided to come. I was only 21 years old.
  • Mr Tan was very hardworking, he sold vegetables, chicken and fruit
  •    
  • Selling vegetables, chicken and fresh fruits!

  • After he became rich, he started helping the Chinese Community

  • Major Farquhar sent new to the people in Melaka that the British had established a trading port in Singapore. Mr Tan decided to come to Singapore. He was 21 years old then.
  • Mr Tan contributed by donating to the building of temples in Singapore.

  • Mr Tan donated some money to build the Chinese Pauper Hospital in 1844

  • When Mr Tan became rich, he started to help the Chinese Community.He was a very generous Community leader. He took care of the burial expenses in the Chinese Community.

  • The Chinese settlers would go to the temple would go to the temple to give thanks for their safe arrival in Singapore from China. Thian Hock Keng temple is one of the oldest Chinese Temples in Singapore. It became a national monument in 1973 along Telok Ayer Street.
  • He donated some money build the Chinese Pauper Hospital in 1844. It was build to serve the poor. It was later renamed Tan Tock Seng Hospital to honour his contributions.
  • After Mr.Tan passed away, his family continued to donate money to build more hospital wards.
