  • "The reason why men enter into society is the preservation of their property" (Document 3B)
  • "for if by nature one man should love another as man, there could no reason be return'd why every man should not equally love every man". (Document  2A)
  • Thomas Hobbes
  • Achievements: He wrote The Two Treatises of Government and added a preface before it was published in 1690. Because of Locke if the government failed to respect people's rights it broke the contact and could be ovethrown.
  • Published Works: John Locke's most famous works are an Essay Concerning Human Understanding. And his other most famous work was the Two Treatises of Government. 
  • Background: Was born in county side of England in 1632. He earned a spot at a prestigious boarding school in far-off London. He was greatly influenced by his father. Between 1642 and 1651, during Locke's childhood, a civil war enraged in England.
  • Background:Born in England in 1588, wrote fear and I were born twins. His father was a clergyman. He traveled many times to meet writers. 
  • Achievements: In 1651 Hobbes wrote his most famous works leviathan. In it , he argued that people are naturally wicked and cannot be to govern. 
  • Published Works: "In Leviathan Hobbes wrote that humans are driven by a prenatal and restless desire for power... that ceases only in death and that the natural condition of human kind is a situation of a war of every man against every man".(Document 2B)
